Abstract

In the Carthage Symposium MUSI/MLA 200T: Exploring Poetry and Song: Creations in Time – French and Spanish, students work to increase language skills, music literacy, acquire basic performance skills in voice, piano and/or guitar, as well as competency in the use of the software recording programs, but this group of fledgling composers has some really neat stuff.

Process: Each student completes at least four recording projects of increasing complexity and originality.

1. Found poem with found music.
2. New poem with found music
3. Found poem with new music.
4. New poem with new music.

This experience immerses students in a multimedia creative world beyond comfort: creative writing in English, French and Spanish, music performance, audio engineering, and weighing aesthetic value. Composed by students with majors from Business Administration, Exercise and Sport Science, Psychology, Criminal Justice, French, German, Art, Communication, and Finance, the creativity and aesthetic nuance of these songs is affecting. Sensitive use of language, flexible vocalization, and fresh musical creativity of inspired synchronicity and artistic accomplishment cause spontaneous celebration in class. In addition to individual compositions, the students have created entertaining group Flash Poetry projects. We request to share these compositions with others, as well as inspire the creator in every acoustic adventurer.
