Type of research: Senior thesis

Abstract

This senior thesis explores the law's role in the preservation of the beer brewing traditions of Germany since the unification of the German state in 1871. The thesis begins with an overview of the history of beer brewing, regulations on brewing from pre-unification German states, the place of beer in German culture, and changes experienced during the Industrial Revolution. Through an analysis of German federal law, International treaties, European case law, and beer production statistics, the paper reveals how the law was used to expand the German international beer market while maintaining culturally important beer traditions.
