Type of research: Master's thesis

Abstract

This secondary research examines the barriers that female athletic trainers face in attaining leadership positions, particularly head athletic trainer roles. Despite the growing numbers of women entering the athletic training profession, research remains limited on why female ATs are underrepresented in athletic training leadership. Understanding these barriers is essential for fostering equitable career advancement opportunities for females. Data was collected using PubMed, MEDLINE, and google scholar to identify studies from 2015 to 2025. Key search terms such as “barriers to female athletic trainers”, “female athletic trainers in male sports”, and “women as head athletic trainers” were used to identify recurring barriers. Data was analyzed thematically. The findings highlight gender stereotypes, exclusion from professional networks, and challenges related to work-life balance as significant obstacles. However, advocacy efforts are increasing, showing a positive shift towards greater representation of female ATs in leadership roles within the past few years. Ongoing research and employment support are necessary to expand these opportunities for women in the athletic training profession.
