Abstract
During the past two years, 36 novel mycobacteriophage have been isolated from local water and soil samples surrounding Carthage College. All of these phage are capable of infecting the bacterium Mycobacterium smegmatis, a non-pathogenic relative of M. tuberculosis. The genomic sequence of LizLemon, which was recently isolated from squirrel feces, revealed that it is a cluster B2 phage with extensive homology to Rosebush. The genome consists of 67,496 base pairs of DNA and contains 92 individual genes. The function of most of these genes is unknown, but many of the genes align with similar genes in other cluster B2 mycobacteriophage. Annotation and analysis of the sequence indicate that the Tapemeasure protein is 1882 amino acids in length. There is also a putative translational frameshift in gene product 67 that has not been previously identified in other B2 cluster phage. Future studies will further characterize this phage and attempt to verify the putative translational frameshift.
