Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents itself in a variety of ways, often times difficult to treat. Depending on its severity, several different forms of therapy are available for use. One rather unconventional, and growing form of therapy used for children with ASD is Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT). DMT is the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process that furthers the emotional, cognitive, social, and physical integration of the individual. DMT is beneficial in that it aids in the development of prosocial behavior - a positive goal to work towards for children with ASD, given their difficulty with emotional expression and empathy towards others.

To understand the impact of DMT for children with ASD, a study was proposed to show the correlation between DMT and prosocial behaviors. With knowledge of the effectiveness of DMT, accurate referrals can be made by social workers and other therapists for the individuals and families of the ASD population.
