Instructions

Student presentations must have a faculty sponsor.

Abstracts must include a title and a description of the research, scholarship, or creative work. The description should be 150-225 words in length and constructed in a format or style appropriate for the presenter’s discipline.

The following points should be addressed within the selected format or style for the abstract:

  • A clear statement of the problem or question you pursued, or the scholarly goal or creative theme achieved in your work.
  • A brief comment about the significance or uniqueness of the work.
  • A clear description of the methods used to achieve the purpose or goals for the work.
  • A statement of the conclusions, results, outcomes, or recommendations, or if the work is still in progress, the results you expect to report at the event.

Presenter photographs should be head and shoulder shots comparable to passport photos.

Determinants of effective access to education by women in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

This research uses panel data in an Ordinarily Least Squares regression method to analyze what determines the access to education by girls in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study uses data obtained from the World Bank for twenty one countries which are representatives of all the parts of the continent. From the adoption of the 8 Millennium goals by the United Nations, the second goal is to ensure that no gender disparities exist in primary school level by the year 2015. Therefore, government agencies and Non­ Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that are working towards achieving zero disparity have to know exactly what has been increasing these disparities to ensure that they invest in the right way to achieve maximum results.

My regression results show that wealth and income factors affect the gender disparity but health has the greatest effect. HIV prevalence and life expectancy for both males and females have a great impact on the education attainment levels. Future research should be contacted once data becomes available to determine the effects of religion, cultural and transportation factors which have been confirmed to have great effects in previous research.  Effective policy measures should be adopted to ensure that more focus is put on the factors that have the greatest negative impact to be able to achieve gender parity without subjecting any group to any form of disadvantage.
