Abstract

Various methods exist in the field of development work that aim to increase standards of living in developing countries.  Recently the concept of small businesses has taken hold as an effective means for families to improve their living situations. In order to investigate the potential of a more unfamiliar type of small business, I spent last summer living and traveling in rural Guatemala to better understand the shrimp industry. I focused on the role that small shrimp farming, following a small business model, could have in rural development. After learning the basics of the industry, I lived with families who had started their own small shrimp farms with the help of a local large scale shrimp producer. Through case studies I analyzed the profitability and respective risks involved in shrimp farming and gathered informal testimonies from current shrimp farmers. A highly profitable small business, shrimp farming also carries certain risks such as high start-up costs while also being a monoculture, which presents an opportunity for a total loss. Despite the risks, shrimp farming offers the possibility of increased income, job creation, and can also lead to additional investment in human capital as families begin to have the necessary funds to send their children to better schools. The information learned from the project, in conjunction with additional research this semester, has led me to conclude that shrimp farming is a profitable endeavor for many families in rural areas. Small shrimp farming presents a unique opportunity for rural communities to increase their standards of living and contribute to their development.
