Abstract

In 2003, a study was performed by Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan called “Are Emily and Greg More Employable than Lakisha and Jamal?”  This field experiment focused on measuring racial discrimination in the labor market.
Our experiment is a continuation of this study. It is carried out by generating fake resumes with stereotypical White, African American, and Hispanic names for both males and females. The resumes are mass produced fitting an experienced job seeker in the fields of management, sales, human resource, and clerical work. The resumes are sent out to employers using online job searches and responses by phone or email are recorded for each gender and race.
