Abstract

This paper explores the unhealthy diet patterns in the United States; specifically the harsh effects sugar has on the body and why the marketing and advertising of sugar has created an addiction. Criticisms of cereal box spokes-characters aid in determining a major reason why sugar has become so hard to resist. Although many consumers can’t resist the addictive taste of sugar, studies done by Cornell College and other researchers prove that the psychology behind the marketing of sugary cereal increase positive feelings towards the sugary products and encourage consumers to buy them. This paper examines the research behind the marketing and advertising of added sugar in cereal and suggests solutions to fixing the worldwide epidemic sugar has caused: obesity.
