Abstract

Emilia Pardo Bazán was an important writer in the nineteenth century who expressed her opinions and thoughts through writing. In every piece of work that Bazán completed, there was a message about a theme embedded in her writing that she wanted the reader to grasp during the course of the story. She included many themes in her work, however, one of the most frequent themes in her writing was the movement of feminism. The theme of feminism was extremely significant in Spain in the nineteenth century because women needed to fight for their existence in a world dominated by men. This thesis will explore and analyze the connections that Emilia Pardo Bazán makes throughout the book, Memories of a Bachelor. The bachelor in the book, Mauro, discusses his distaste for marriage until Mauro falls in love with a character named Feíta. Feíta is a nontraditional woman who expresses her want and need to be independent. In spite of all of the criticisms that Mauro had about marriage throughout the story, he ends up falling in love and marrying Feíta because of their shared values of a united matrimony.  During this time period, the relationship between the two main characters was viewed as feminist. How did the two main characters in Emilia Pardo Bazán’s book, Memories of a Bachelor, depict the element of feminism that existed in Spain in the nineteenth century?
