Abstract
This thesis has examined how the media is negatively impacting young women’s body image in Japan through the research of previous studies as well as the interviews with Japanese women that were conducted entirely in Japanese. The results indicate that through the media’s negative portrayal of overweight women and unhealthy glorification of thinness, women tend to lack confidence, and have a desire to change their bodies through methods such as dieting that can be harmful not only towards their mental state, but also to their physical bodies. The media is promoting an unreachable idealistic image of women which is causing a lack of confidence and self-esteem, as women try to fit themselves to an unrealistic standard that has been pushed onto them by the media.Submit date: March 17, 2019, 10:57 p.m.
