Abstract

Through our SURE research, we investigated the potential for Carthage to market itself as a sustainable college and analyzed the financial impact of that marketing. Over the course of the summer, we met with Carthage staff members and asked them about sustainability at Carthage. We ultimately discovered that Carthage has significant potential as a green campus and is well equipped in terms of sustainability. The problem was that few people—especially current and potential students— knew this.  Rather than work to equip Carthage with new sustainable practices, we developed a plan to include their current sustainability initiatives into their communications to inform students, staff, incoming students, and even donors. We believe the financial impact of green marketing would be significant; by marketing itself as a green campus, Carthage can save money, reduce waste, and attract more forward-thinking students.
