Abstract

In this project, I connect elements of Shakespeare’s play The Tempest with themes from Plato’s The Republic. I focus on education in the two texts and specifically the process by which one is educated. My evidence is drawn from Act 1 Scene 2 of The Tempest and Book 7 of The Republic; these are the two sections of each text in which education is discussed. The model form of education is explained in The Republic and I have found that this process is exemplified by several characters in The Tempest. Prospero takes on the role of educator for both his daughter Miranda and the subservient native islander Caliban. Concerning Miranda’s education, Prospero’s teachings are precisely what they should be according to Plato, but I argue he does not go far enough in educating Caliban.
