Abstract

This thesis analyzes Nigeria’s development from European colonization up to the present through two lenses.  The first interpretation of the nation’s development is through the Modernization Theory.  The second perspective is World Systems Theory.  These two theories offer key insights into the evolution of Nigerian economics, politics, social structures, and relationships with foreign actors, whether states or institutions. Through the observation of various statistics, political movements, and other measures of progress, one can see the methodologies of both Modernization and World System theorists.  By examining both of these theories in conjunction with Nigeria’s development, this thesis analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of both concepts.
