Abstract

Children experiencing an intense situation or situations causing a feeling of helplessness can lead to trauma. There are two different categories of trauma. Simple trauma incidents occur usually once and are brief. Complex trauma incidents occur more frequently resulting in long-lasting effects (Brunzell, Waters, & Stokes, 2015). Some students might fight because of how unfair their situation is or flight to avoid the situation (Sitler, 2009). Understanding the variety of trauma experiences that occur and the symptoms will enable the teachers to identify when students need help.

Educators could be the only source of relief for the students. In order to understand how teachers can help those students with trauma experience, I searched for resources and interviewed educators. Interview results indicate that both teachers mentioned they were not trauma educated until they started teaching. One of the primary responsibilities for a teacher when noticing these symptoms mentioned above is to not judge (Sitler, 2009). According to the educators I interviewed and the articles, some steps to help students include creating positive relationships and using reinforcements. After researching information on Trauma and interviewing the educators, the conclusion can be made that both have similar stances but also different points of view. For instance, the articles stress warning students before making changes in the schedules while the teachers explained how schedules change.
