Abstract

Geography Information Systems (GIS) are highly used in transportation in order to improve traffic flow.  Chicago O’Hare is one of the busiest airports in the world with thousands of flights each month.  With so activity, automobile transport to and from the airport may result in  traffic jams near O’Hare.  We investigate the correlation between the number of airline arrivals and departures with the traffic count near the airport as well as a time lag effect in the data.  The transportation industry could benefit from this information in determining traffic management systems based on the automobile traffic generated per departure or arrival.  This will enhance the estimation of appropriate highway lanes and sizes near airports and increase our overall productivity.
