Abstract

Over a ten-week period, I researched and choreographed a contemporary dance entitled, “Untitled”. My research for the dance was funded by a 2020 SURE grant. I am currently a junior at Carthage College and studying Graphic Design and pursuing a minor in Dance. The completed research is a combination of both areas of study. “Untitled” is a 5-minute long performance for six dancers that demonstrates how humans have changed in response to the pandemic. The piece emphasizes the changes in how people now interact with each other. It also shows how humans interacted with their environment during periods of isolation; however, the more structured and architectural movements represent the actual environment and the changes to the cities themselves. My process was multifold: I worked with a music producer on an original sound score. I interviewed choreographers from across the globe, and I conducted a survey of both students and staff members about their pandemic experiences. To incorporate my graphic design skills, I worked on a series of designs and video projections. I also met with a graphic designer and public artist who collaborates with dancers. I have a lot of valuable takeaways from this research experience. I learned how to communicate with professionals in the field. I learned how to choreograph a piece with six dancers in it, which is more than I have ever done before. “Untitled” was featured in the December dance show on campus, “Flying and Falling”.
